Ok ok, red velvet cake is good any day, I agree. But why not change things up and serve this bad boy up for your next game day party, tailgate or even for opening day since that’s just around the corner!  I found this super yummy recipe from my go-to on sweets, Paula Deen.

Red Velvet Game Day Cake

Yes I made this one for Valentine’s day but shaping it was so much easier than expected.  First off let’s make some cake:

Ingredients for the Red Velvet Cake:

Cake Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease and flour 3 (9-inch) round layer cake pans.
  2. Sift flour, baking soda and coco together.
  3. Beat sugar and eggs together in a different large bowl.
  4. In a separate bowl mix together oil, vinegar, food coloring, and vanilla and add to the bowl of eggs and sugar and beat until combined.
  5. Add the flour mixture and the buttermilk to the wet mixture by alternating the buttermilk and dry ingredients, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  6. Pour batter into pans and bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the middle comes out clean but be careful not to over bake or you’ll end up with a dry cake.
  7. Let layers cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
  8. Cool completely before shaping and frosting.

Once they are cool, I just used a long sharp knife to shape this particular cake into a heart by doing one layer then using it as an outline on the other cakes.  You could easily shape it into a football or hockey jersey.  There are also cute stencils you can print out to decorate the cake.

While the cakes are cooling, whip up the frosting (see what I did there).

Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients:

Preparation for Frosting:

  1. Let margarine and cream cheese soften to room temperature. Cream well.
  2. Add sugar and beat until mixed,
  3. Add vanilla. Spread between layers and on top and sides of cake.

I found this video that really helps with how to ice a cake if you need some guidance (I DID!)

And just so you know I went fist first, literally into this cake so I can verify that it is delicious and sure to please any crowd.
